Abstract:
A method and apparatus for cooling, separating, pelletizing, shaping, agglomerating and coating hot tacky particulates, particularly those of elastomeric polymers, wherein a gas stream containing the hot tacky polymer particulates is introduced into an enclosed body member (12) having an interior peripheral wall (14) and an exterior peripheral wall (16) which is spaced from the interior wall so as to form an annular space therebetween. A heat transfer medium, such as a cooling fluid, is introduced into the annular space. The gas-particulate stream is introduced into the body tangentially and at a high velocity such that the particles are caused to contact the peripheral interior wall of the body and are thereby cooled. Action of the particles in impinging upon the interior wall serves to pelletize the particles. The body may be formed of a plurality of sections, or zones, wherein the interior wall of each zone may be maintained at a constant specified temperature. Agglomerating agents and coating materials may be introduced directly into the body, or with the inlet stream, whereby the particles may be agglomerated and/or coated in the specified temperature zone. Additionally, the body may be provided with a gas outlet tube (52) for withdrawing the gas from the body so as to separate the particles from the inlet gas stream.
