Abstract:
The burnishing method and apparatus for implementing the method of the present invention utilizes a burnishing process to provide deep compression with a minimal amount of cold working and surface hardening. In particular, the method of the present invention comprises the steps of selecting a region of the part to be treated (block 10); selecting the magnitude of compression and the residual stress distribution to be induced along the surface of the selected region (block 12); and inducing a layer of compressive residual stress along the surface of the selected region having the desired magnitude of compression and stress distribution (block 14). In a preferred embodiment, the layer of compressive residual stress is induced by a burnishing operation using a burnishing apparatus (100) having a single-point burnishing member (106) is forced against the surface (108) of the part (110) and moved along the surface (108) in a substantially nonoverlapping pattern. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the burnishing apparatus (100) automatically increases the pressure being applied against the surface (108) on high point and decreases on low points along the surface (108).
