Abstract:
Provided are: a method for calculating a clustering evaluation value, the method making it possible to obtain an evaluation value for evaluating a clustering state with which it is possible to suppress an excessive number of classifications; and a method for determining the number of clusters, the method using the evaluation value. An evaluation value computation unit: derives, as a degree of internal connectedness, the sum for each cluster of the values obtained by normalizing the values indicating the degree of dispersion of the data within the cluster, using the number of items of data in the cluster; derives a degree of external separation obtained by normalizing the value indicating the degree of mutual separation of the clusters, using the number of clusters; and obtains an evaluation value as a ratio of the degree of internal connectedness to the degree of external separation. The value indicating the degree of dispersion of the data within a cluster is the sum of squares of the distance within the cluster between the center of gravity of the cluster, and the data of the cluster. The degree of external separation is the sum of squares of the minimum distance between clusters derived for each cluster.
