Abstract:
System and method for welding carbon-fibre reinforced thermoplastic workpieces (10, 12) comprises upper and lower tools (1, 2) each having a holder (4.1, 2.1) for holding a respective workpiece (10, 12) in cantilever fashion during heating (6), and a pusher (4.2, 2.2) movable relative to the holder (4.1, 2.1) for pressing the heated areas (10.1, 12.1) of the workpieces against each other once they have been brought together by the tools (1, 2). This arrangement allows the heated ends (10.1, 12.1) to be surrounded with air, providing thereby a smaller, more homogeneous thermal gradient across the thickness of the respective workpieces (10, 12). This also helps reduce heat dissipation from the workpieces (10, 12) to the tools (1, 2), especially in materials with high heat conductivity. Ideally, heating is provided by a movable infrared heater (6) cooperating with shielding screens (8).
