The invention relates to a method for displaying a luminous animation on a light-emitting system (1) of a motor vehicle, implemented by a graphics engine (MG1, MG2, MG3) and comprising the following steps: (E1) providing the graphics engine with a description (D1) of at least one element (21, 22, 23) of the light-emitting system; (E2) providing the graphics engine with a description of at least two luminous sub-animations (D2i,j) forming a luminous animation (Ai) and each associated with at least one priority index (z1, z2) and/or at least one opacity coefficient (α1, α2); (E3, E4, E5, E6, E7) determining, by means of the graphics engine, a sequence of control instructions (bk) for controlling said element, said sequence being determined on the basis of the descriptions, priority indices and/or opacity coefficients of the luminous sub-animations and of said element; (E9) controlling the element by means of the sequence of control instructions so as to display said luminous animation.
