Abstract:
Disclosed is a method for simply manufacturing a gradient-index optical element
having infrared absorbing ability wherein a refractive index gradient is easily
formed in a desired portion of a glass base having infrared absorbing ability
without requiring a specific processing atmosphere and without using a molten
salt. Specifically disclosed is a method for manufacturing a gradient-index
optical element having infrared absorbing ability, which is characterized
in that a paste containing at least one compound selected from the group consisting
of lithium compounds, potassium compounds, rubidium compounds, caesium compounds,
silver compounds, copper compounds and thallium compounds, an organic resin
and an organic solvent is applied onto a glass base containing an alkali metal
component and at least one element selected from the group consisting of iron,
copper, cobalt and vanadium, and the resulting is heat-treated at a temperature
lower than the softening temperature of the glass base. In this connection, when
only iron among the group of iron, copper, cobalt and vanadium is contained in
the glass base, the ion content is more than 3% by weight in terms of Fe2O3
when the total weight of the glass is taken as 100% by weight.
