Abstract:
Provided as a method for manufacturing ultrafine fibers from multifilaments is a method for manufacturing ultrafine fibers with mean fiber diameters of less than 1 µm using a device in which a starting filament delivery means and a stretching chamber are connected by an orifice for which the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet is at least 20 kPa. The method for manufacturing ultrafine fibers is characterized in that: using multifilaments as starting filaments, the multifilaments are guided to a stretching chamber under the condition that the ratio (S2/S1) of the total multifilament cross-sectional area (S2) to the cross-sectional area (S1) of the laminar flow section of the orifice is 50% or less; laser irradiation is performed at a position that is 1-15 mm vertically below the orifice outlet on the multifilament exiting the orifice to melt the leading end of the multifilament; and the melted portion of the leading end of the multifilament is stretched as a result of the multifilament as a whole being randomly swung by an airstream inside a conical space with a maximum angle of 5-80° with respect to the central axis of the orifice and the orifice hole as the apex.
