Abstract:
The invention relates to a method of obtaining polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin resins which are suitable for the production of wet-strength paper. In addition to the standard steps that are performed for the production of such resins, the inventive method comprises an additional step consisting of the addition, with agitation, of a base containing a mixture of an alkali hydroxide, particularly sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and a carbonate or alkali hydrogen carbonate, particularly sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), whereby the Na2CO3/NaOH mole ratio is between 0.01 and 0.9 and, preferably, between 0.1 and 0.6. In this way, the invention can be used to obtain PAE resins with a low content of organochlorinated by-products, such as DCP and MCPD, and, when employed as additives, said resins enable the production of paper with a wet strength that is significantly improved in relation to standard PAEs.
