Title:
METHOD FOR OXIDATION OF CELLULOSE AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF CELLULOSE NANOFIBERS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2011/074301
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
Provided is a method for accelerating the oxidation of primary hydroxyl groups of a cellulosic raw material to achieve efficient introduction of carboxyl groups. Also provided is a process by which a cellulose nanofiber dispersion having excellent fluidity, transparency and thermal stability can be efficiently produced with low energy consumption. Such a cellulose nanofiber dispersion can be produced by: oxidizing a cellulosic raw material with a hypohalous acid salt in the presence of (1) an N-oxyl compound and (2) a compound selected from the group consisting of bromides, iodides, and mixtures thereof under the conditions of pH 8-11 to introduce carboxyl groups in an amount of 1.0mmol/g or more relative to the absolute dry mass of the cellulosic raw material; subjecting the oxidized cellulosic raw material thus obtained to further oxidation with a halous acid salt under the conditions of pH 4-6; and then subjecting the resulting oxidized cellulosic raw material to fibrillation/ dispersion treatment to form a cellulose nanofiber dispersion.
