The purpose of the present invention is to provide a method for preparing a 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoic acid or a salt thereof, the method being capable of efficiently preparing a highly pure 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoic acid or a salt thereof. According to the method, a highly pure 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoic acid or a salt thereof can be efficiently prepared by performing at least one operation among (a)-(c) below on a solution which is exposed to an environment of pH 6.0 or lower and contains 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoic acid and impurities. (a) Hypochlorous acid or a salt thereof is added to the solution. (b) The solution is kept below 40°C for at least 2 hours, or at 40-200°C for at least 30 minutes (the solution contains hypochlorous acid or a salt thereof). (c) A calcium salt is added to the solution, and precipitated calcium 2,3-dihydroxy-3-methylbutanoate is separated from a liquid phase in which a 3-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoic acid and/or a salt thereof is dissolved.
