Abstract:
The present invention pertains to a method for producing alkali cellulose in which the cellulose polymerization degree decreases little and in which few bases are used. The present invention also pertains to a method for producing cellulose ether using the obtained alkali cellulose. [1] A method for producing alkali cellulose involving: a step (1) for obtaining a cellulose powder mixture having a median size of 150 µm or less by pulverizing a cellulose-containing starting material in the presence of 0.6 to 1.5 mol of a basic compound per 1 mol of an anhydroglucose unit constituting the cellulose within the cellulose-containing starting material and under the condition in which the moisture content within the cellulose-containing starting material is 10 mass % or less relative to the cellulose; and a step (2) for obtaining pulverized alkali cellulose by adjusting the moisture content to 30 to 100 mass % relative to the cellulose as a consequence of adding water to the aforementioned cellulose powder mixture. [2] A method for producing cellulose ether by means of the reaction between the alkali cellulose produced in the aforementioned production method and an etherification agent.
