Disclosed is: a method for producing cationized cellulose, which comprises a step (1) wherein a cationization agent is added to cellulose and a crystallinity decreasing treatment is carried out by means of a mechanical force, and a step (2) wherein a base compound is added to the mixture obtained in the step (1) and a crystallinity decreasing treatment is carried out by means of a mechanical force; or a method for producing cationized cellulose, which comprises a step (3) wherein a base compound is added to cellulose and a crystallinity decreasing treatment is carried out by means of a mechanical force, and a step (4) wherein a cationization agent is added to the mixture obtained in the step (3) and a crystallinity decreasing treatment is carried out by means of a mechanical force. The methods for producing cationized cellulose are characterized in that the cellulose and the cationization agent are made to react with each other in the step (2) or in the step (4). Also disclosed is a method for producing cationized hydroxyalkyl cellulose.
