Title:
METHOD FOR PRODUCING METHYLBENZYL ALCOHOL BY CATALYTIC CONVERSION OF ETHANOL AND CATALYST THEREFOR
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2020/051956
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The present invention belongs to the technical field of chemical catalysis, and provides a method for producing methylbenzyl alcohol by catalytic conversion of ethanol and a catalyst therefor. The present invention aims to develop a catalytic conversion route for producing methylbenzyl alcohol from ethanol and to provide a dedicated catalyst for the route, with special emphasis on employing a single bed catalyst that involves a simple process to achieve the catalytic reaction, in hopes of providing an important alternative route for increased production of aromatic oxygenates. The present invention provides a route for direct production of methylbenzyl alcohol by catalytic conversion of ethanol and a corresponding catalyst therefor. The method has a selectivity of up to 60% for methylbenzyl alcohol, and the prepared catalyst has excellent stability. The reaction route generates a large amount of hydrogen without CO or other gases, and the hydrogen can be used directly in a chemical reaction and a fuel cell. The route also generates higher aliphatic alcohols that can be used as a fuel or an oil additive to partly replace a petroleum product, thereby reducing dependence on crude oil.
