Abstract:
A silica-based glass rod (3) with a core section (1) and a clad section (2), the diameters of which both are uniform in the longitudinal direction, is heated and stretched, and gradually reduced in diameter to form a tapered glass rod (4). After that, the outer periphery of the tapered glass rod (4) is cut to form an optical fiber parent material (5) for an optical part, the optical fiber parent material having an outer diameter that is uniform in the longitudinal direction. Preferably, the tapered glass rod (4) having been reduced in diameter be heat-treated by flame or an electric furnace before the outer periphery is cut. The processing or treatment may be done by a glass lathe.
