Abstract:
The present invention provides a novel, simple and environmentally suitable technology for producing oxygen and hydrogen with a high water decomposition rate. Based on the founding that an aromatic amine polymer functions as an oxidation catalyst for generating oxygen from water and a polyarylene vinylene functions as a reduction catalyst for generating hydrogen from water, the present invention has produced oxygen and hydrogen at a high rate by applying a low overvoltage with respect to the equilibrium potential, since both of the catalysts operate with an extremely low overvoltage. In addition, the production rate of oxygen and hydrogen has been increased by irradiating the water oxidation/oxygen generation catalyst with light including sunlight. The aromatic amine polymer and the polyarylene vinylene are low-cost aromatic polymers that exhibit extremely high durability in water over a wide pH range, while enabling the achievement of hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, interfacial area, shape and the like that are suitable for electrode catalysts.
