Abstract:
Provided is a method for producing a polyarylene sulfide, which is capable of producing a polyarylene sulfide at low cost, while improving the productivity and saving resources without comprising a cumbersome process and without requiring a special device (facility). A method for producing a polyarylene sulfide according to the present invention comprises: a preparation step for preparing a mixture that contains an organic amide solvent, a sulfur source, a dihaloaromatic compound and an alkali metal hydroxide in an amount less than the equivalent molar amount with respect to the sulfur source; a first-state polymerization step wherein a polymerization reaction is started by heating the mixture, so that a prepolymer having a conversion rate of the dihaloaromatic compound of 50% or more is produced; and a second-stage polymerization step wherein the polymerization reaction is continued in a homogeneous liquid phase by adding the alkali metal hydroxide in an amount of 1.00-1.10 moles per 1 mole of the sulfur source.
