Abstract:
Provided is a method for producing a poly(vinylbenzyl)ether compound in which it is possible to reduce production costs while decreasing the residual amounts of halogen-based compounds and halide ions. A method for producing a poly(vinylbenzyl)ether compound by reacting a compound having a phenolic hydroxyl group with halogenated methylstyrene, wherein the method includes a reaction step for reacting a compound having a phenolic hydroxyl group with halogenated methylstyrene represented by general formula (1) (where X represents any atom selected from chlorine and bromine) in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide aqueous solution in a solvent containing an aromatic hydrocarbon and an aprotic polar solvent, the dihalide compound content for dihalide compounds represented by the general formula: C9H8X2 (where X represents any atom selected from chlorine and bromine) in the halogenated methylstyrene is 1.5% by mass or less, and the aprotic polar solvent content in the solvent is 5% by mass or more.
