Abstract:
A method of remediating arsenic pollution in soil using active iron and manganese oxides induced by bacteria under aerobic/microaerobic conditions. The method selects Pseudomonas putida (strain MnB1, ATCC 23483), introducing the bacterium into a culture medium containing manganese carbonate and culturing for 3-10 days, until the bacterium induces production of a brown-black flocculent product, then introducing the metabolite to arsenic-polluted soil, and culturing under aerobic/microaerobic conditions for another 3-21 days. Using the metabolite of the bacterium, it is possible to convert exchangeable arsenic in soil into residual arsenic, decreasing mobility and bioavailability of the arsenic in the soil, effectively fixing the arsenic in the soil. The present method has simple operation, low treatment costs, a wide scope of use and no secondary pollution.
