A technique of reducing the volume of organic sludge, which proliferates in association with the aerobic biological treatment of waste water, by ozone treatment. It is intended to solve the problem of worsening in the qualities of the treated water which occurs in the above technique. This object can be achieved as follows. A portion of sludge (D1) is withdrawn from a biological treatment system (10) for the aerobic biological treatment of waste water (A) containing organic materials. The thus withdrawn sludge is subjected to a treatment with ozone in an ozone treatment unit (20). After the completion of the ozone treatment, a solidifier is added to the sludge (D2) followed by solid&sol liquid separation. A portion in the same or larger amount than the inorganic SS and un−BOD components in the separated sludge (D3) is discharged from the system and the residual sludge and the separated water (E) are returned to the biological treatment system (10).
