Abstract:
A mobile robot of the present invention comprises: a first pattern emitting unit for emitting a first-patterned light towards a floor in a cleaning area in front of a main body; and a second pattern emitting unit for emitting a second-patterned light towards the upper front direction with respect to the main body, wherein the mobile robot is configured so as to acquire, through an image acquisition unit, an image in which the patterned lights respectively emitted from the first pattern emitting unit and the second pattern emitting unit are incident on an obstacle, detect the patterns from the acquired image, thereby determining the obstacle, and avoid a precipice by detecting the precipice according to the shapes or locations of the patterns, thereby travelling via a route by which the mobile robot does not fall from the precipice, and thus the mobile robot may first determine whether there is a precipice, and travel or avoid same by distinguishing between a threshold and a precipice such as a stair, etc., and thus may travel more effectively by being capable of determining and operating quickly, and may prevent, in advance, problems such as falling from a precipice such as a stair, etc.
