Abstract:
A sensor unit (5) is described for monitoring the usage of an item the unit comprising a microphone and proximity detector mounted on a wearable unit and a detectable tag being mounted on the item to be monitored. The wearable unit (3) further comprises memory to store data collected until it is transferred, a clock to time stamp the data, short range communications such as Bluetooth LE to enable transfer of the data to a home base station, a controller to marshal activity and a power supply such as a battery. The controller is usually in a sleep mode with occasional awakening to check for proximity of the item. When the item's presence is detected the sensor unit fully awakens to start recording for a fixed time. The sensor unit periodically checks its short range communications to determine proximity to the home base station. When it is within range it transfers the records to the home base station.
