[Problem] To provide a motor control device capable of, without adding new device components, surely and highly reliably protecting, in response to an abnormal mode, a motor release switch constituted in a small size with a semiconductor switching element in association with a temperature, and to provide an electric power steering device equipped with the motor control device. [Solution] A motor control device in which a motor release switch comprising FETs is connected between an inverter and a motor detects an assist state and turns a control of the inverter on or off. The motor control device is provided with: a control unit for detecting the presence or absence of an abnormality; a motor rotation detection unit for detecting motor rotations; an energy calculation unit for calculating an energy based on the motor rotations; a determination unit for turning all the FETs of the motor release switch off when the energy enters a safe operating area; an abnormality detection unit; and a state detection unit for detecting the presence or absence of the abnormality based on information from the abnormality detection unit. The motor control device also turns the control of the inverter on when the state detection unit has not detected the abnormality and turns the control of the inverter off when the abnormality is detected.
