A multi-stage rotary compressor according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a rotating shaft, a drive element provided on one end side, in the axial direction, of the rotating shaft, and a compression element provided on the other end side, in the axial direction, of the rotating shaft. The compression element includes a low-stage compression mechanism portion for compressing a working fluid to an intermediate pressure, and a high-stage compression mechanism portion for compressing the working fluid at the intermediate pressure to a high pressure. The low-stage compression mechanism portion and the high-stage compression mechanism portion each include a cylinder, a roller that is fitted to an eccentric portion of the rotating shaft, and a blade which advances and retreats relative to the roller, and which demarcates the inside of a cylinder chamber into a suction side and a compression side. The blade of each compressor mechanism portion is urged toward the roller through the action of discharge pressure on a dorsal surface thereof. The cross-sectional area of a blade member forming the blade of the low-stage compression mechanism portion is less than the cross-sectional area of a blade member forming the blade of the high-stage compression mechanism portion.
