Abstract:
[Problem] To perform multipass printing at high speed on continuous paper. [Solution] A printer (10) comprising: a rotating drum (11); an unwinding roll (12) and a winding roll (13) that are built into the drum; and print heads (18) disposed on the outside of the drum. The print heads assume a fixed position with respect to drum rotation but move in the direction orthogonal to the print medium conveyance direction and assume N number of positions. The print heads perform one pass printing on the print medium along the outer circumference of the drum at a different print head position for each single drum rotation and perform N-pass printing with N drum rotations. Printing is performed in a specified angle range (printing region) in a single drum rotation and the print heads are moved in the remaining angle range (non-printing region). Said printer can be operated in both a "continuous mode" in which N-pass printing is performed sequentially while shifting the print starting position by a specified distance in the conveyance direction with each drum rotation and a "batch mode" in which N-pass printing on the same region without conveying the print medium during printing is repeatedly performed.
