Abstract:
A near ultraviolet excitable phosphor, characterized in that it has a crystal structure wherein 0.1 to 10 mol % of Eu is incorporated into the crystal structure of a composite oxide comprising Ti and any metal element M of Mg, Sr, Zn, Y and Ca in place of a part of Ti, and emits a red light by the excitation with a near ultraviolet ray having a wavelength of 300 to 420 nm; and a method for preparing the near ultraviolet excitable phosphor which comprises forming a gel containing a composite metal oxide or a composite metal hydroxide from a solution comprising a hydrolysable titanium compound and a hydrolysable metal compound of any metal of Mg, Sr, Zn, Y and Ca, adding 0.1 to 10 mol % of europium chloride to the gel, followed by drying, and then firing the resultant product at 850 to 1100°C. The above near ultraviolet excitable phosphor is novel, and emits a red light with high brightness and exhibits a prolonged life.
