Abstract:
An industrially advantageous process for producing a benzoic acid derivative of general formula (V), having a retinoid activity readily at a high yield safely. The process comprises the steps of conducting the Friedel-Crafts reaction between acetanilide, which is easily available and safely handleable, and 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-dichlorohexane, conducting acyl interchange between the reaction product and monomethyl ester chloride of terephthalic acid, hydrolyzing the reaction product, and recrystallizing the hydrolyzate from methanol/water, wherein these various steps of reaction are conduct in one and the same vessel. The crystals of the obtained compound are suitable for pharmaceutical preparation because they contain a reduced amount of a residual recrystallization solvent and have uniform particle sizes.
