An object detection device that comprises a distance computation circuit, an object determination circuit, a signal-outputting circuit, and a mode-switching circuit. The distance computation circuit calculates the distances and directions to objects on the basis of the physical relationship between measurement light that is outputted from a light-emitting element, measurement light that is reflected from the objects, and a scanning optical system that scans space with the measurement light and guides the reflected light to a light-receiving element. The object determination circuit determines whether the distances and directions to the objects as calculated by the distance computation circuit are inside a prescribed monitoring area. The signal-outputting circuit outputs an object detection signal when it has been determined that an object is inside the monitoring area. The mode-switching circuit switches between a first mode in which it is determined whether there is an object inside the monitoring area regardless of the intensity of the reflected light and a second mode in which it is determined whether there is an object inside the monitoring area only when the intensity of the reflected light is at or above a prescribed threshold value.
