Abstract:

A first exit-side polarizing plate (920) and a second exit-side polarizing plate (934) are disposed on the exit side of a liquid crystal display (400) while being spaced apart in the direction of the optical axis and being insulated thermally from each other. The first exit-side polarizing plate (920) is attached to a first heat conducting plate (926) attached to the incident surface of a color synthesis optical device (500), and the second exit-side polarizing plate (934) is attached to a second heat conducting plate (936) held on a polarizing plate holding frame (904). Since heat is dissipated through mutually independent paths, an optical device in which degradation in the exit-side polarizing plate and the liquid crystal display due to temperature rise is prevented is provided and a projector comprising this optical device is also provided.
