Abstract:
This optical element (11) is connected to a pair of optical waveguide elements through a pair of third waveguide cores, the optical element comprising a pair of first waveguide cores (111_1, 111_2), a pair of second waveguide cores, and a connection waveguide (115), wherein: the refractive index of the first waveguide cores is greater than the refractive index of the second waveguide cores; at least a modal field changing unit of each of the first waveguide cores is covered by the second waveguide cores; the connection waveguide is connected to a pair of second waveguides through optical multiplexing/demultiplexing units (114_1, 114_2); and one of the second waveguide cores (112_1) is connected to one optical waveguide element (12_1) through one third waveguide core (131_1), and the other of the second waveguide cores (112_2) is connected to the other optical waveguide element (12_2) through the other third waveguide core (131_2). As a result, this optical element can reduce manufacturing costs and increase the number of signal optical fibers for connection.
