Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing an optical element in which the dependence of reflection on wavelength is small, a light guiding element using this optical element, and an image display device using this light guiding element. This optical element comprises a plurality of cholesteric liquid crystal layers having selective reflection center wavelengths different from each other. Each cholesteric liquid crystal layer has a liquid crystal orientation pattern in which the direction of an optical axis derived from a liquid crystal compound changes while continuously rotating in at least one direction in a plane, and when the length over which the optical axis rotates though 180° in the one direction in which the direction of the optical axis rotates is defined as one cycle, the permutations of the length of the selective reflection center wavelength of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer and the permutations of the length of one cycle match, thereby solving the problem.
