Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing a thin optical element capable of reflecting only light in a specific wavelength range in a given direction, and a sensor using the optical element. The optical element has a cholesteric liquid crystal layer. The cholesteric liquid crystal layer has a liquid crystal alignment pattern in which the orientation of an optical axis originating from a liquid crystal compound changes while continuously rotating along at least one direction within a plane. When defining as one period the length through which the orientation of the optical axis changing while continuously rotating in the one direction rotates through 180 degrees, the cholesteric liquid crystal layer has regions with different period lengths within the plane. With this configuration, the aforementioned problem is solved.
