Abstract:
The problem addressed by the present invention is to provide a novel optical element that can be used for a sensor, or the like, and a sensor that employs the optical element. To solve the problem: the optical element is provided with a cholesteric liquid crystal layer; the cholesteric liquid crystal layer includes a liquid crystal alignment pattern in which the orientation of an optic axis pertaining to a liquid crystal compound changes while rotating continuously along at least one direction within a plane; and when a cross section cut in the thickness direction along the one direction in which the orientation of the optic axis rotates is observed using a scanning electron microscope, the cholesteric liquid crystal layer includes, along the one direction in which the orientation of the optic axis rotates, a portion where a bright line and a dark line derived from a cholesteric liquid crystal phase are discontinuous.
