Abstract:
The present invention provides an optical filter which exhibits excellent opacity, thermal insulation, and durability. The optical filter has a first polarizing plate having a first polarizer and a first patterned optically anisotropic layer, and a second polarizing plate having a second polarizer and a second patterned optically anisotropic layer, wherein: the first and/or second polarizing plates are capable of relative movement in parallel with the other; the first patterned optically anisotropic layer contains a plurality of first phase-difference regions and a plurality of second phase-difference regions alternatingly positioned at a first pitch along the direction of relative movement; the second patterned optically anisotropic layer contains a plurality of third phase-difference regions and a plurality of fourth phase-difference regions alternatingly positioned at the first pitch along the direction of relative movement; the first and/or second polarizing plates are reflective polarizers; and the light transmittance when the first and third phase-difference regions overlap is different from when the first and fourth phase-difference regions overlap, when viewed from a direction perpendicular to the surface of the first polarizer.
