Title:
OPTICAL TRANSMITTER
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2021/059449
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides a novel configuration which solves or mitigates the problem of optical waveform quality degradation and a lack of optical output, while taking advantage of the feature enabling simplification of a manufacturing process through the use of identical layer structure in an electro-absorption distributed feedback (EADFB) laser in which a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is integrated. The EADFB laser in which the SOA is integrated may be utilized as an optical transmitter. The optical transmitter of the present disclosure adopts a waveguide structure in which a DFB laser and an SOA use an identical layer structure and yet have separate and different core widths (waveguide widths). Waveguides of different core widths are adopted to eliminate or mitigate the problem of waveform degradation due to a lack of saturation optical output or a pattern effect. In a portion between an EA modulator and the SOA, a passive waveguide region is introduced, and a tapering shape is used in the passive waveguide region whereby the waveguide width is varied continuously.
