Abstract:
An optical waveguide element comprising a plurality of photonic crystal regions (305) having holes (304) arranged cyclically, and optical waveguides (302) formed between a plurality of photonic crystal regions (305). A plurality of holes (304) adjacent to an optical waveguide (302) on the opposite sides of the waveguide (302) are arranged symmetrically with respect to the center axis extending along the wavegide direction of the optical waveguide (302). A plurality of refractive index compensation regions (303) are arranged cyclically along the waveguide direction in the optical waveguide (302) such that the equivalent refractive index of a portion held between each pair of holes (304) symmetrical with respect to the center axis is higher than those of other portions. When the radius of a hole (304) is r, the center-of-gravity position of each refractive index compensation region (303) is shifted along a waveguide direction from the middle point of a line connection the centers of holes (304) and exists between a position 0.45r away from the middle point in the waveguide direction and a position 0.25r away from the middle point in a direction opposite to the waveguide direction.
