Abstract:

[PROBLEMS] To provide an oral composition which promotes defecation and lessens abdominal distension. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] By using an oral composition containing patchouli oil and a dietary fiber, the defecation frequency of a subject with a tendency toward constipation can be increased while a decrease in the defecation frequency of a normal subject with no tendency toward constipation can be regulated (i.e., the normal defecation frequency can be sustained and constipation can be prevented) and abdominal distension can be lessened owing to the dietary fiber. Examples of the dietary fiber include water-soluble dietary fibers such as guar gum, locust bean gum, tamarind gum, tara gum, xanthan gum, glucomannan, carrageenan, alginic acid or its salts, pectin, collagen, polydextrose, pullulan, acacia and carboxymethylcellulose sodium and insoluble dietary fibers such as cellulose, lignin, chitin, chitosan, hemicellulose, &agr -cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose, hydroxymethylcellulose and hydroxyethylcellulose.
