Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing an organic electroluminescence element and an illumination device in which the driving voltage does not increase even when a high-productivity sputtering method is used in forming a transparent electroconductive layer of a top emission-type or a top and bottom emission-type organic electroluminescence element, and in which the driving voltage is improved. This organic electroluminescence element is characterized in having at least a light-emitting layer and a transparent electroconductive layer; a transparent protective layer being arranged between the light-emitting layer and the transparent electroconductive layer; the light-emitting layer containing a phosphorescent light-emitting compound; the transparent protective layer containing a metal oxide; the metal oxide being a molybdenum oxide (hexavalent), a rhenium oxide (hexavalent), or a nickel oxide (divalent); and the molybdenum oxide (hexavalent), rhenium oxide (hexavalent), or nickel oxide (divalent) being in an oxygen-deficient state.
