This organic EL device (1) is provided with: a substrate (2); a recessed portion (9); a reflective layer (3) that is provided along the inner surface of the recessed portion (9); a filling layer (12) that is filled into the inner side of the recessed portion (9) with the reflective layer (3) interposed therebetween and is optically transparent; a first electrode (4) that is provided above the filling layer (12) and is optically transparent; an organic layer (5) that is provided above the first electrode (4) and includes a light emission layer; and a second electrode (6) that is provided above the organic layer (5) and is optically transparent and optically reflective. At least a portion of the edge of a light emission region (35) is positioned further to the inside than the edge of the recessed portion (9), and the reflective layer (3) and the first electrode (4) are in contact at the periphery of the recessed portion (9).
