Abstract:
An oxide coating is formed on the surface of a ferrous material, which is the base material for a sliding member, and has one of the following configurations: (1) a configuration in which the outermost surface-side comprises a portion containing iron sesquioxide (Fe2O3) and the base material-side comprises a silicon-containing portion that contains more silicon (Si) than said base material; (2) a configuration comprising a composition A portion in which the component accounting for the greatest part thereof is iron sesquioxide (Fe2O3), a composition B portion in which the component accounting for the greatest part thereof is triiron tetraoxide (Fe3O4) and which comprises a silicon (Si) compound, and a composition C portion in which the component accounting for the greatest part thereof is triiron tetraoxide (Fe3O4) and the silicon content is higher than the composition B portion; or (3) a configuration containing at least a first portion comprising microcrystals, a second portion containing a columnar structure and/or a third portion containing a layered structure.
