Abstract:
A process for producing a 5−alkoxy−2(5H)−furanone represented by the general formula (IV), characterized by reacting a 2(3H)−furanone compound represented by the general formula (I) with an alcohol represented by the general formula (II) and a halogenating agent to obtain a 4−alkoxy−3−halogeno−&gammad −butyrolactone represented by the general formula (III) and reacting the resultant 4−alkoxy−3−halogeno−&gammad −butyrolactone with a base. (I) (II) (III) (IV) (In the formulae, R1 represents hydrogen, optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted aryl, or optionally substituted aralkyl&semi R2 represents optionally substituted alkyl, optionally substituted cycloalkyl, or optionally substituted aralkyl&semi and X represents halogeno.) Thus, a 5−substituted 2(5H)−furanone, such as a 5−alkoxy−2(5H)−furanone, can be industrially advantageously produced efficiently at low cost.
