A paper coating fluid containing at least a pigment, a binder, and a flowability modifier. The flowability modifier comprises at least two ingredients selected from the group consisting of an ingredient (a) (a copolymer comprising at least one kind of structural units (structural units A) selected between acrylic acid units and methacrylic acid units and at least one kind of structural units (structural units B) selected between acrylic ester units and methacrylic ester units), an ingredient (b) (a copolymer comprising structural units (A), structural units (B), and a given kind of structural units (C)), and an ingredient (c) (a thickener and/or a water-holding agent (provided that the ingredients (a) and (b) are excluded)), provided that the ingredient (a) or ingredient (b) is essential. The paper coating fluid has improved water retentivity and heightened viscosity and, despite this, has improved flowability and can be applied at a high rate.
