The present invention has a first group of interpolation computing units for performing interpolation by average maintenance interpolation computation and a second group of interpolation computing units for performing interpolation computations other than the average maintenance interpolation computation, each of the interpolation computing units performing interpolation computation for a defective pixel and calculating an interpolation candidate value (M(h)), as well as calculating a test interpolation value (M(t)) using pixels in the vicinity of the defective pixel as test pixels. A determination unit (4) selects one of a plurality of interpolation computing units on the basis of the result of test interpolation. An output unit (5) selects and outputs an interpolation candidate value, from among the plurality of interpolation candidate values (M(h)), that is outputted from the interpolation computing unit selected by the determination unit (4). Interpolation can be performed so that the interpolated pixels do not appear unnatural, and in addition, a relatively smaller storage capacity and data processing amount are required.
