Abstract:
A polarizing element of simple structure which can be used for two wavelengths in a predetermined wavelength region. The polarizing element has a two-layer structure obtained by forming a lattice pattern having a trapezoidal cross-section at a constant period Λ on a substrate and then applying a film having a refractive index higher than that of the substrate on the lattice pattern. When a relation &lgr 1<&lgr 2 is satisfied between first wavelength &lgr 1 and second wavelength &lgr 2, a relation ΛcosѲ0<&lgr 1 is satisfied, assuming the incident angle to the lattice plane is Ѳ0. Lattice period, lattice height, inclination angle of the nonparallel side of a trapezoid, duty ratio and film thickness are determined such that the polarizing element functions as a reflection element for one of TE polarization and TM polarization of the first wavelength &lgr 1 and functions as a transmission element for the other, and functions as a reflection element for one of TE polarization and TM polarization of the second wavelength &lgr 2 and functions as a transmission element for the other.
