Abstract:

A solid acid or a composite solid strong acid comprising the solid acid and a carbon material which is prepared by subjecting a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon or a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in combination with the carbon material to a heating treatment in conc. sulfuric acid or fuming sulfuric acid, to thereby form a condensed and sulfonated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, or to thereby condense and sulfonate the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and form a solid acid insoluble in a polar solvent and simultaneously form a composite with the carbon material.
