Provided are: a polyester resin which has excellent content contamination resistance and alkali resistance and is capable of forming a coating film that is not susceptible to workability deterioration over time, and which is suitable for a resin composition for coating cans; and a resin composition for coating cans. A polyester resin according to the present invention is obtained by reacting polycarboxylic acids (A) with polyols (B). This polyester resin contains 15-40 mol% of terephthalic acids and 50-85 mol% of isophthalic acids in 100 mol% of the polycarboxylic acids (A) in total, and contains 10-45 mol% of an alicyclic diol, 40-80 mol% of a linear diol (a) that has 4-6 carbon atoms, while having a primary hydroxyl group at each end and having no side chain, and 5-35 mol% of a diol (b) that has 3-4 carbon atoms, while having one primary hydroxyl group and one secondary hydroxyl group, in 100 mol% of the polyols (B) in total.
