Abstract:
A polymer actuator that is extensible/shrinkable in a linear direction, being lightweight and that is operable at low voltage. There is provided polymer actuator (1) comprising aqueous solution of electrolyte (6) and, arranged therein, multiple gel/electrode composites (4a,4b), the gel/electrode composites (4a,4b) composed each of polymer gel (2a,2b) containing a polymer having at least either acidic or basic functional group and, accommodated therein, electrode (3a,3b) containing a material capable of electrochemical occlusion and release of hydrogen, wherein the pH values within the polymer gels (2a,2b) of the gel/electrode composites (4a,4b) are changed in accordance with application of voltage between the electrodes (3a,3b) of the multiple gel/electrode composites (4a,4b), so that the gel/electrode composites (4a,4b) undergo respective volume changes in accordance with the changes of pH values.
