Provided are: a polar compound having high chemical stability, high ability for aligning liquid crystal molecules, and high solubility in a liquid crystal composition, and showing a high voltage retention rate when used in a liquid crystal display element; and a composition comprising the compound. The compound is represented by formula (1). In formula (1), for example, P denotes a moiety represented by any of formulas (1b)- formula (1i), Sp denotes a single bond, Z denotes -COO-, and A denotes 1,4-phenylene.
