Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a position detection device and a position detection method for a moving object capable of compressing the data amount of distance data acquired by a distance sensor. In order to achieve the above purpose, provided is a position detection device for a moving object that autonomously moves while estimating its own position by collating distance data measured by a distance sensor with map information on an environment in which the moving object moves, wherein the distance data is measured in the measurement direction of a plurality of predetermined angles within a predetermined angle of the surroundings in a frame process in which the distance sensor measures a predetermined angle of the surroundings, and the position detection device comprises: a position/orientation detection processing unit which estimates the position and orientation of a moving object in a map on the basis of distance data and outputs position/orientation information; a map generation processing unit which generates a map on the basis of distance data and outputs map information; and a distance selection processing unit which receives the distance data, assigns numbers in order for each distance where map information exists in the measurement direction, and outputs the number of the distance where the distance data exists in the measurement direction as a distance number.
