Abstract:
A process for producing an ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer is provided in which impurities resulting from saponification, such as a saponification catalyst residue, by-products, and a solvent, are removed to a high degree and with which it is possible to efficiently produce a homogeneous product of high quality. The process includes a main cleaning step which comprises introducing a paste comprising an ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer and an alcohol into a horizontal cleaning tank, applying shear force to the paste to knead the paste within the horizontal cleaning tank so that the paste surface is repeatedly displaced by the inner part of the paste, while keeping the paste in contact with washing water, and discharging some or all of the alcohol from the tank together with the washing water to obtain a water-containing ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer composition reduced in alcohol content. Thus, some or all of the alcohol and the impurities are removed highly efficiently.
