Abstract:
A method of synthesizing an optically active amino acid and a derivative thereof in a two-phase system consisting of a water-immiscible medium and an alkaline aqueous solution using as a phase-transfer catalyst an optically active quaternary ammonium salt having axial asymmetry. This method can comprise steps which are more inexpensive and have higher controllability than in conventional methods. It can hence be industrially practiced sufficiently.
